Markham's History of France

Mrs. John Penrose (1780-1837) used the Markham pseudonym for this book as well as several other histories: History of England and a History of Germany.

In 1848 the first American edition was published by Harper and Brothers. This edition and the subsequent known Harper and Brothers' editions (1856, 1858, 1860, 1861, 1862, 1863, 1867, 1870 and 1876) were edited by Jacob Abbott. He included a map of France in each book and inserted a number of pages of questions for students to answer. Abbott also wrote the final chapter in the book, Louis Philippe 1830-1848).
