The Werner Company, Akron, Ohio and the New Werner Company
published the Abbott biographies in several series.
Paul Werner founded the Werner Printing and Lithographing Company in
1886. The latter company was reorganized as the Werner Company in 1894.
In 1909 the Werner Company failed but was purchased one year later by
Werner and several others forming the New Werner Company.
The Werner Company published the Makers of History 20 book
series in two formats beginning in 1907. One full cloth set and another
half leather set. When the New Werner Company was established in 1910,
it published the Makers of History in both formats also.
All of the books were written by Jacob Abbott except for the
four indicated below. Of note is the Hernando Cortez and the Josephine
Werner and New Werner books list Jacob not John S. C. Abbott as the
author.

x 7. The set cost $2.00.

The Best Book Series which was published by The New Werner Company included Abbott biographies. Not much is known about this publisher's series. As of this time two Abbott books have been identified: the one pictured and Alfred the Great.
